Η Μαρία Ταμπούκου είναι Αναπληρώτρια Καθηγήτρια Κοινωνιολογίας. Οι ερευνητικές της δραστηριότητες αναπτύσσονται στις περιοχές της αναλυτικής σκέψης του Φουκώ και του Ντελέζ, των κριτικών ρευμάτων του φεμινισμού και των αυτο/βιογραφικών αφηγήσεων. Στο επίκεντρο της δουλειάς της είναι οι φεμινιστικές γεννεαλογίες, ενώ οι θεωρίες για το κοινωνικό φύλο και τον χώρο εξελίχθηκαν σε ιδιαίτερο πεδίο των ερευνητικών της ενδιαφερόντων και δημοσιεύσεων. Το βιβλίο της Women, Education and the Self: a Foucauldian Perspective (Palgrave, Macmillan, 2003) συνιστά τόσο μία γεννεαολογική μελέτη των γυναικών στην εκπαίδευση όσο και έναν οδηγό φουκωικής γεννεαλογίας.

Σχετική με αυτό το βιβλίο είναι και η μονογραφία της Dangerous encounters: genealogy and ethnography, ένας συλλογικός τόμος στον οποίον είναι συνεπιμελήτρια, η οποία διερευνά τις θεωρητικές και μεθοδολογικές σχέσεις μεταξύ της επιστημολογίας της εθνογραφικής έρευνας και των πρακτικών της γεννεαλογικής μεθόδου του Φουκώ.
Το χρηματοδοτούμενο ερευνητικό της πρόγραμμα από το Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC), με τίτλο In the Fold between life and art: a genealogy of women artists (Στο μεταίχμιο μεταξύ ζωής και τέχνης: μία γεννεαλογία γυναικών καλλιτεχνών) εξετάζει την τέχνη ως δυναμική περιοχή κοινωνικής δράσης η οποία δημιουργεί συνθήκες πιθανής ανάδυσης απίθανων εκδοχών υποκειμενικότητας.
Ως συνδιευθύντρια του Κέντρου για την Έρευνα στην Αφήγηση έχει συν-επιμεληθεί το βιβλίο Doing Narrative Research (Sage, 2008) το οποίο συμπεριλαμβάνει διάφορα συμπόσια αφήγησης που οργάνωσε το Κέντρο.
